VIDEO: Cheers? Beer and wine coming to a corner store near you

Date:

Premier Doug Ford has some ‘big news’ to share today about alcohol sales in Ontario

“Get ready,” says Premier Doug Ford.

Five years after first championing the idea of selling beer and wine at your local corner store, Ford is expected to announce today how his government plans to make that promise a reality.

He teased the news in a short video posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday.

“We made a promise to you to bring wine and beer to convenience stores and grocery stores across the province of Ontario,” Ford said. “Get ready. We’ve got big news coming tomorrow.”

On the latest episode of Village Media’s Inside the Village podcast, a leading expert on alcohol regulation — Dan Malleck, a Brock University health sciences professor — explains how the Ford government’s plan will impact The Beer Store. Is it last call for the longstanding retail chain? And if it is, where will we bring our empties?

Cheers to an in-depth conversation!

Hosted by Scott Sexsmith and Michael Friscolanti, the Editor-in-Chief of Village Media, Inside the Village is a news and current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from across our chain of Ontario newsrooms.
