Family Can’t Sue After Suicide of Man Arrested in Political Plot

The family of an individual who committed suicide after he was arrested for a politically motivated plot to damage Sen. Thad Cochran’s (R-Miss.) 2014 reelection campaign can’t sue city officials or the campaign’s law firm for his death, the Fifth Circuit affirmed.

Mark Mayfield, who supported Cochran’s Tea Party challenger in Mississippi’s Republican primary that year, contributed to a scheme which sought to make an alleged affair between Cochran and his assistant into a campaign issue. He provided information to other supporters on what nursing home room housed Cochran’s wife, who had progressive dementia at the time, so that those …
