Delta Goodrem and Natalie Imbruglia divide fans

Date:

Delta Goodrem has performed at the Melbourne Cup for the first time in 16 years.

The pop star did it in style while wearing a flowing blue dress and sitting at a white piano.

Goodrem didn’t miss a beat while performing her, ‘Born To Try’ hit.

Goodrem joined former Noiseworks frontman Jon Stevens and Natalie Imbruglia as part of a star-studded line-up at Flemington.

Imbruglia finished the pre-race entertainment off by singing the national anthem.

Goodrem got the show off with a bang, but plenty of fans felt she was not the right choice to get the crowd excited for the big race.

“Delta superglued to the piano as usual. Way to put everyone in the mood. If the mood was a solid 8 hours sleep,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another wrote: “This is so horrible. First Delta putting everyone to sleep and now some guy in his 60’s thinking he is some kind of sex symbol rock god singing songs that had some vague popularity 40 years ago”.

Goodrem said from the start she was up for the challenge.

“I haven’t sung in the Mounting Yard at Flemington on Cup Day since 2007,” Goodrem said earlier this week.

“I’m so looking forward to taking to the stage alongside friends, Jon Stevens and Natalie Imbruglia.

“This is my fourth year as a Melbourne Cup Carnival ambassador.

“What I love most about the event is that it truly is an Australian moment, a part of our social fabric, that’s watched and loved globally.”

Imbruglia is making her first appearance at the Melbourne Cup and has never previously sung the national anthem publicly.

“This will be the first time I have ever performed the Australian National Anthem in my career and it is an honour,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to singing on Melbourne Cup Day, not only to a packed crowd at Flemington, but to share this moment with the millions of people tuning in around the world.”

VRC Chairman Neil Wilson said the club was thrilled to welcome the iconic trio.

“Delta, Jon and Natalie are all much loved Australian performers and we’re looking forward to welcoming Delta and Jon back to the track and having Natalie perform as part of the pre-race entertainment for the first time,” he said.
