Women’s Basketball Falls to SIUE on Friday Afternoon

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team fell to SIU Edwardsville, 56–51, on Friday afternoon at the Seabury Center.
 
Senior forward Joseana Vaz nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Liz Freihofer also scored in double figures for the 20th time in her career, adding 11 points and seven rebounds.
 
EKU (1–1) shot 30% (18-of-59) from the field, 24% (6-of-25) from 3-point range and 58% (7-of-12) at the free-throw line. Despite the loss, the Colonels reached 40 rebounds for the second straight game.
 
SIUE (2–0) was led by freshman forward Lauren Miller’s 24 points and nine rebounds. The Camp Point, Illinois, native shot 10-of-19 from the floor, including 11 points in the fourth quarter.
 
The Colonels led 14–12 after the first quarter but scored just 10 points in both the second and third periods as the Cougars gained control. SIUE edged EKU 18–17 in the final frame to hold on for the five-point win.
 
Miller scored 11 of her 25 points in the final frame, preventing the Colonels’ comeback efforts.
