State Elections Board recognizes No Labels as an official political party

Date:

On Sunday, the State Board of Elections voted to recognize the No Labels Party as an official party in North Carolina.

Four members of the board voted in favor of recognizing the party as an official part and one member voted against it.

With the vote, voters in the state can register as No Labels, Democratic, Green, Libertarian or Republican parties, or they can register as unaffiliated.

“It’s a great day for democracy in the Tar Heel State. The North Carolina Board of Elections chose to stand with voters to give the No Labels Party of North Carolina access to the ballot,” No Labels Party of North Carolina chairperson Dennis Blair said in a statement. “I commend them for setting aside partisan politics to hear the voices of thousands of North Carolinians who support No Labels and who are part of America’s growing commonsense majority. Today, North Carolina and democracy won.”

Earlier this year, Arizona Democrats lost a lawsuit that was looking to block the party from being recognized in elections there. No Labels has also gained ballot access in states including Alaska, Colorado and Oregon.

According to a spokesperson for the board, the Board of Elections received over 14,000 valid signatures from registered voters in North Carolina petitioning for party recognition. The Board says political party petitions require 13,865 signatures.

The State Board also received 200 signatures from three different districts, which is required by the state.

The State Board said voter data will be updated to include No Labels registrants as soon as possible and it is updating voter registration forms to include the No Labels Option.
