Spirit shutdown will impact summer travel, expert says

Date:

Budget carrier Spirit Airlines ceased operations over the weekend, leaving empty kiosks at airports across the country, including LaGuardia.

The airline’s shutdown is also leaving travelers with many questions ahead of the summer travel season.

Clint Henderson, managing editor at The Points Guy, joined NY1 anchor Shannan Ferry on “News All Day” to discuss the impact of Spirit’s closure. He said the factors that contributed to Spirit’s bankruptcy — including high fuel costs — will cause more turbulence in the airline industry moving forward.

“Book all your travel for the rest of the year now,” Henderson said. “We’ve already seen fares go up between 20 and 30 percent, airlines have added and raised baggage fees, and now they have added fuel surcharges on top of tickets.”
