Shirley M. Straight

Shirley M. Straight, 77, of Stoddard Road, Sugar Grove, PA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born on August 11, 1946 in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of the late Adolph and Mae Bailey Hamm. Shirley graduated from Panama High School in 1964.

Shirley worked in the pharmacy at K-Mart, she was a meat wrapper for Coffaro’s Butcher Shop in Sugar Grove and she and her husband Donald owned and operated S&D Sports Discount Store for over 30 years. Shirley was a trainer for American Red Cross and taught First Aid, grooming, life skills and healthy living in schools.

Shirley was a member of Joy Fellowship FMC in Jamestown, N.Y. She was an avid gardener/canner and grew all her own vegetables to feed her family. She enjoyed crocheting and crafting and traveling to craft shows. She was also an accomplished marksman and won many awards. She enjoyed deer hunting with her family. Shirley and Donald were very involved in youth groups hosting community parties for lots of kids throughout the years, especially Halloween parties. Shirley’s main priority was raising and caring for her family. She looked forward to Christmas so she could host and entertain her family.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Donald E. Straight, Sr., whom she married on August 21, 1964 in Bear Lake, PA; two daughters: Misti Green of Falconer, N.Y. and Pastor Dodi (Kenneth) McIntyre of Jamestown, N.Y., her son: Donald, Jr. (Jeanne) Straight of Sugar Grove, PA, her sister: Elizabeth (Jeff) McCray of Bear Lake, PA, her brother: Allan (Becky) Hamm of Blockville, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Shirley is preceded in death by her brother: Adolph “Butch” Hamm, Jr. and a granddaughter: Christina Pessia.

Family and friends may call at Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home, Inc., 316 E. 5th St., Jamestown, N.Y., on Sunday, September 24, 2023, from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Monday at Joy Fellowship FMC at 11:00 AM. A visitation will be held on Monday at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. Pastor Dodi McIntrye (daughter) pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Wesleyan Cemetery, Sugar Grove, PA.
