James Gunn is the biggest name in Hollywood right now, as the co-head of DC Studios and the mind behind Superman and the super successful series Peacemaker. But what he really loves is, apparently, the long-running CBS reality show Big Brother.
Big Brother is often derided because the show goes out of its way to make itself look ridiculous, but it’s actually one of the most strategic and interesting games ever played. It’s hugely popular with bored housewives looking for cheap drama, but it’s also secretly big with strategy-minded mega-nerds like James Gunn, who tend to keep quiet about it so no one makes fun of them.
In addition to saving the entire DC superhero universe, Gunn is now also blazing a trail by making it safe for nerds to admit their Big Brother fandom. He appeared on the show this week, revealing he’s been watching the series since season one, way back in 2000. He looked like a kid on Christmas. I don’t think I’ve ever seen James Gunn look happier than he was sitting on set across from Julie Chen, or next to Derrick, his all-time favorite Big Brother player.
Gunn was rewarded for his appearance by living out the ultimate Big Brother fan fantasy: He got roasted by Zingbot. The iconic mocking robot appeared with him in his second Big Brother guest spot of the week, on the recap series Big Brother Unlocked.

For anyone who isn’t a Big Brother fan, this whole thing probably looks terrible and cringe. That’s why nerds tend to keep quiet about it. But for socially awkward, introverted weirdos trying to understand how to engage with people, there is no better instructional manual than a show that lets you watch 16 people living their daily lives, twenty-four hours a day.

Welcome him with open arms, fellow introverted, awkward, Big Brother nerds. James Gunn is one of us.
