Omotayo Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

Date:

NEW YORK – For the first time in her career, Ire Omotayo has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.

This is the second week in a row that Villanova has had a player receive a weekly award from the conference. In all, the ‘Cats have been represented on five weekly honor lists from the BIG EAST, two of those coming with major awards and the other three being Weekly Honor Roll recipients.

The Calgary, Alberta, Canada native played all 90 minutes on the backline for a seventh consecutive game, starting in all nine matches on the year. She was a part of a Villanova defense that staved off a late-game comeback from Seton Hall in Sunday’s 2-1 victory to open BIG EAST action. That victory kept Villanova undefeated on the season, holding a 4-0-5 record to be one of just 13 undefeated teams left in the nation. Since 2022, the Wildcats have pieced together 12 consecutive games without a loss.

Omotayo and the Wildcats hit the road this weekend for their first conference road tilts of the season. The first one comes on Thursday with a trip to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on Xavier.
