Nonpartisan political podcast hosts partner with Maine DOE

Pine State Politics: In Session is a nonpartisan political podcast hosted by Bowdoin College rising juniors Natalie Emmerson and Larson Van Horn.Now, Emmerson and Van Horn are working with the Maine Department of Education to use this podcast to create lesson plans for Maine high school teachers to use in their classrooms. “I think actually one of the unique things about it is that you don’t learn it in school, which is why we wanted to create it as a tool,” Emmerson said. “We came to them and we’re like, we have this project. What’s the best way to make it accessible to teachers?” “Natalie and I have been thinking about how we can incorporate these podcast episodes into classroom material,” Van Horn added.The DOE, Emmerson and Van Horn are working together to create writing and discussion prompts while also serving as role models to Maine students. “In addition to teaching about the civics, they’re modeling really great youth-led civic engagement. And I hope that that’s really impactful when it is available to Maine students,” said Beth Lambert, from the Maine DOE.Resources for the DOE are expected to be available within the next two years.
