NFL free agency isn’t here quite yet — but the NFL news cycle never sleeps.
Coming out of the 2026 NFL combine, now with less than a week to go before the start of the legal tampering period (set for Monday, March 9 at 12 p.m. ET), the news cycle is heating up.

The latest bombshell dropped on Thursday, with the news that the Bears are reportedly trading star wide receiver D.J. Moore to the Bills. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Buffalo is sending a 2026 second-round draft pick to the Bears, while the Bills will also acquire a 2026 fifth-rounder along with Moore. In Ben Johnson’s first year as head coach of the franchise, Moore had career lows in catches and receiving yards despite playing in all 17 games.
On Friday, it was reported that the Las Vegas Raiders, barring a trade, will release quarterback Geno Smith after one season. Smith’s departure will free up $8 million in salary cap space, while the Raiders will assume $18.5 million in dead money.
Smith’s lone season with the Raiders did not go well. He threw for 3,025 yards and 19 touchdowns while leading the NFL with 17 interceptions. The writing was on the wall for Smith after the Raiders finished 3-14 and clinched the top pick.
Smith isn’t the only player set to be released, either. The week leading up to the official start of free agency on March 12 will also be a busy time for the release of NFL veterans, as each team makes moves to become compliant with the salary cap, which is officially set at $301.2 million per club.

Among players who will reportedly be released are Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, Vikings veterans Aaron Jones and Javon Hargrave, as well as Commanders cornerback Marshon Lattimore.
Earlier this week, the Houston Texans made some moves, having reportedly acquired veteran running back David Montgomery from the Detroit Lions in exchange for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and a fourth- and sixth-round pick. The team also reportedly agreed to trade starting right tackle Tytus Howard to the Cleveland Browns, who subsequently agreed to terms on a three-year, $63 million extension.
The Chiefs made a splash play on Wednesday, reportedly trading All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for the 29th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, as well as a fifth and sixth and 2027 third-round pick.

Detroit Lions offensive lineman Taylor Decker announced on his Instagram page that he had requested and would be released by the team, saying that he could not find common ground after multiple discussions. Decker’s release will save $17.9 million in cap space for the Lions in 2026 and $21 million in 2027.
Decker announced last week that he would be returning to play another season in the NFL after mulling retirement after last season.
The 32-year-old is the longest tenured Lions player and has 145 career games since being drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Ohio State.
The loss of Decker means the Lions will lose their fourth offensive lineman in the last two seasons, after the retirements of Frank Ragnow and Dan Skipper and the recent release of Graham Glasgow. Outside of All-Pro offensive tackle Penei Sewell, the Lions’ offensive line struggled last season. Sewell could reportedly possibly move to the left side without Decker.
Expect the Lions to continue to try to rebuild the offensive line in free agency and the draft. The Lions have already acquired offensive lineman Juice Scruggs in the David Montgomery trade.

Ingold had spent the last four seasons with the Dolphins after beginning his career with the Raiders. The Dolphins move on from Ingold after parting ways with former head coach Mike McDaniel, who utilized a fullback in his offense.
Ingold is the latest player to part ways with the Dolphins. The Dolphins have also moved on from Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb and Jason Sanders this offseason. It remains to be seen what happens with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly on track to release quarterback Geno Smith.
They’re also expected to take Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza with the first pick in this year’s draft.

The Las Vegas Raiders are releasing quarterback Geno Smith, barring a trade before the start of the new league year, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
In doing so, the Raiders will reportedly save $8 million in salary cap space while taking on $18.5 million in dead money.
The Raiders traded for Smith last offseason and signed him to a two-year, $75 million extension. That move reunited Smith with then-head coach Pete Carroll, whom Smith resurrected his career with in Seattle.
But the Carroll era came to a swift end in Vegas, and now Smith’s time is up in silver and black as well.
In his lone season with the Raiders, Smith threw a league-high 17 interceptions. Vegas went 2-13 in his 15 starts and possesses the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, in which it’s expected to select reigning Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza out of Indiana.

In an effort to get under the salary cap the Browns are restructuring quarterback Deshaun Watson’s contract, lowering the $80.7 million cap hit.
A large amount of Watson’s salary cap charge will be turned into a restructure bonus. The charges will be added to the void years of his deal, which run from 2027-2029. This will allow GM Andrew Berry to re-sign the team’s own free agents and also be active when the market opens next week.

The Las Vegas Raiders have tendered a contract to defensive end Charles Snowden, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
With fewer than three accrued NFL seasons and an expired contract, Snowden is an expired rights free agent and the Raiders’ tender means that he can’t negotiate with other teams. Snowden’s choice is to either sign the deal or sit out the 2026 season.
The Raiders also tendered a contract to center Will Putnam, Garofolo reports. Putnam, 25, started two games last season.
Snowden, 27, had three sacks, five tackles for loss and 28 total tackles in 15 games (nine starts) for the Raiders last season. He also swiped an interception and was credited with two passes defended.
An undrafted free agent out of Virginia, Snowden originally signed with the Chicago Bears but only appeared in two games. He was waived during training camp in 2022 and again in 2023 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
