MSY prepares for busy Thanksgiving travel period

Date:

Thanksgiving is exactly one week away. That means Louis Armstrong International Airport is bracing for big crowds of travelers.”The Thanksgiving travel period, we’re looking at things picking up on Tuesday of next week and the busy period will extend through the following Monday,” said airport communications director Erin Burns. That Monday is what the airport expects to be the busiest day of the season. Peak times happen in the early morning and the afternoon, around 3-6 p.m.That’s why they encourage flyers — as always — to get to the airport at least two hours early and plan to park ahead of time, as we’ve seen garages fill up before. “You can reserve your parking online up to 24 hours in advance,” Burns said. TSA will have more crews on hand to handle the holiday rush. “We bring out the canine officers. They expedite screening with the canines. We’ve bulked up our workforce with overtime workers to handle that capacity,” said TSA spokesperson Gervais Joubert. To put that capacity in perspective, Burns said they might surpass COVID-19 travel this weekend with higher numbers expected than this time in 2019.
