LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – More than 1.5 million Kentuckians will travel 50 miles or more from now until January 1, according to travel projections from AAA Blue Grass.
Lori Weaver Hawkins with AAA Blue Grass said the weekend before Christmas and the day following are usually the busiest travel times, regardless of overall travel trends.
“People don’t have to take off of work and they then are able to use those for travel without eating vacation while they’re traveling, so that’s popular, and people like to get to their destination on that Christmas Eve day,” Weaver Hawkins said.

About 92 percent of Kentuckians will drive to their destinations during the holiday season. Weaver Hawkins said the best advice for those hitting the roads is to leave as early as possible.
“Be sure that you get on the roadway early to beat the heaviest of the traffic congestion. Morning is always smoother than as you start to get to midday into the afternoon and evening hours,” she said.
Nearly 3 percent of Kentuckians will fly this holiday season. Weaver Hawkins said travelers often forget to use their airline’s app as a travel tool.
“That’ll help you stay on top of any sort of flight changes, whether it’s a gate change or delay or anything like that. You’ll learn about it usually faster than you would even at the airport,” she said.
Nearly 5 percent of Kentuckians will travel by other forms of transportation, like cruises, which have gained popularity in recent years.
