A local group organizing against a potential sports complex that could be built on Chaney Trail has collected 5,000 signatures, according to one of the organizers.
Pasadena Polytechnic School plans to build a sports complex at the site. The process is currently in the design phase and is expected to take three years.
Some local residents expressed concerns about traffic congestion which has led to the petition.
The complex would be built on property that currently houses Nuccio’s Nurseries. The land occupies about 1.44% of Altadena’s total land area according to AltadenaWILD, a group of local residents that oppose the project.
“As of a few days ago, AltadenaWILD had surpassed 5,000 signatures on a petition of opposition, of which 60% originate from Altadena, 20% from Pasadena and 20% from elsewhere in L.A. County,” Dr. Michael D. Bicay, president, AltadenaWILD Inc.
“Nonetheless, recent community outreach events reveal that most people in Altadena and Pasadena remain unaware of this emerging land-use issue.”
According to Bicay, the group continues to encounter people who are unaware of the complex.
The complex could include a multi-use stadium hosting football/soccer/athletics (track and field), plus seating for 500, a baseball stadium, up to eight tennis courts (seating capacity not specified), locker rooms, weight training facilities, ancillary buildings for storage/support, artificial lighting for evening/night sports events, amplified sounds, two-level subterranean parking garage and environmental sciences classrooms.
Representatives from the school have met with the Altadena Town Council.
A representative from Supervisor Barger’s office has told AltadenaWILD members that the review process could last more than three years. During this time, Poly will have to file a comprehensive Environmental Impact Report (EIR). At some point, the draft EIR will be released for public comment.
AltadenaWild has retained an experienced land-use attorney to provide specific help on formulating an EIR response.
The group has distributed thousands of informational flyers, and yard signs. The group started its website and online petition on February 21.
