NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College women’s basketball team earned its second win of the season with a 57-50 win over Waldorf on Friday in a nonconference game.

It was the first home win of the season for the Knights.

Lydia Feidt came off the bench and scored 10 big points, which included two important 3s and a rebound put-back late in the contest. It was Feidt’s first game since returning from an injury.

“It was awesome to be on the court instead of on the bench cheering for everyone,” Feidt said.

The contest was a close one from start to finish. Waldorf led 13-12 after the first period, MLC led 22-20 at halftime and MLC led 36-34 at the end of the third period. The Knights outscored the Warriors 21-16 in the fourth quarter.

“It was a consistently confident game by every one on our team,” MLC head coach Daniel Gawrisch said.

He was pleased with the team’s communication and how each team member trusted each other, especially when the game was winding down.

Late in the first quarter, Maya Price’s 3 gave MLC an 8-5 advantage. Alyah Abrahamson hit a 3 to tie it. The Warriors took the lead when Abrahamson’s assist led to Lizzie Garza’s 3 to regain the lead for the Warriors.

Late in the second quarter, Feidt stole the ball and hit a 3 which gave MLC a 20-17 lead. Waldorf tied it, but Grace Kieselhorst’s two free throws made it 22-20 at halftime.

Brooke Dial and Sandra Christian made consecutive 3s. Edosa Ogbemudia’s basket tied it 34-34. Kieselhorst’s basket made it 36-34 for MLC.

The game remained in doubt for most of the fourth quarter. Feidt’s 3 gave MLC a 49-46 lead. Two plays later, Heckendorf hit a 3 while closely being guarded by a Waldorf defender to make the score 52-47 MLC.

Dial answered for Waldorf with a layup. Kieselhorst’s basket made it 54-49. Heckendorf’s two free throws iced the win for MLC.

Heckendorf went 4 for 4 at the foul line.

Kieselhorst led the Knights with 15 points. Heckendorf scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Feidt added 10 points and five rebounds.

MLC (2-4) will host Luther College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
