Since 1948, SPMs have become indispensable instruments for the maintenance of international peace and security. They have accompanied Member States through historic times of change, from supporting the decolonization and independence processes in Africa and Asia in the 1960s to assisting Central America in ending its civil wars in the 1990s.
Today, SPMs – civilian missions with mandates to support Member States in conflict
prevention, peacemaking and peacebuilding – have become more numerous, complex and
diverse.
The event will explore the role and contribution of SPMs in the maintenance of international
peace and security as well as the challenges they face in fulfilling their mandates in today’s
complex geopolitical environment, and reflect their achievements, challenges, and lessons
learned over the past seven and a half decades. It will feature the launch of a commemorative video on the work of SPMs and showcase several virtual reality experiences from SPM contexts as well as a photo exhibit entitled “Diplomacy for Peace: Marking 75 Years of SPMs”.
The event is organized by the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs
(DPPA), together with the Permanent Missions of Finland and Mexico.
