Congress’s big rejig: Priyanka Gandhi removed as UP in-charge, Sachin Pilot to lead party in Chhattisgarh | India News

Date:

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Saturday removed Priyanka Gandhi as the party in-charge in Uttar Pradesh as it announced key organizational changes ahead of Lok Sabha elections 2024.
The grand old party has appointed former Rajasthan deputy CM Sachin Pilot as the head of Chhattisgarh Congress and Ramesh Chennithala as its in-charge of Maharashtra.
Priyanka Gandhi will remain the party general secretary without any assigned portfolio, Congress said in a statement.

Priyanka will be replaced by Avinash Pande, who will now be the party in-charge of Uttar Pradesh.
The appointments come two days after a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), party’s highest decision-making body, which was chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and attended by senior leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
Senior leaders Jairam Ramesh, K C Venugopal, Mukul Wasnik and Randeep Singh Surjewala remain the general secretary in-charges of communication, organisation, Gujarat and Karnataka, respectively.
Jitendra Singh, who is the general secretary in-charge of Assam, was given the additional charge of Madhya Pradesh, while Deepak Babaria holds the charge of Delhi and the additional charge of Haryana, the statement said.
The move to relieve Priyanka Gandhi of her responsibilities in UP comes amid speculations that the opposition bloc INDIA may field a strong candidate against PM Modi from Varanasi in the general election.
The names of leaders like Priyanka Gandhi and Nitish Kumar have been doing the rounds as the likely candidates.
Earlier, TOI had reported that the party may remove Priyanka as UP in-charge to give her a bigger national role during the Lok Sabha polls.
