Arizona’s first ”flex lanes” are fully open and can now be used for motorists taking Interstate 17 this holiday travel season.
The Arizona Department of Transportation announced the completion of a years-long project that has added eight miles of flex lanes along I-17 between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point.
The lanes serve as a two-lane roadway that moves in one direction of traffic at a time and can shift between northbound or southbound.
ADOT said these lanes will typically be open to northbound traffic Monday through Saturday before transitioning to southbound traffic on Sundays. ADOT noted how these flex lanes are the first of their kind in the Grand Canyon State.
Earlier this year, ADOT completed work on 15 miles of new third lanes on I-17 from Anthem Way to Black Canyon City. The extra lanes are intended to reduce congestion along the busy freeway.
The project cost an estimated $522 million and was funded with federal and state highway dollars.
