Date:

Planning a trip to Siesta Key and wondering how to make the most of three days? I’ve got you covered!

I recently spent three days here with my family, and it was the perfect amount of time to enjoy the island’s famous beaches and Siesta Key Village, with plenty of opportunities to relax along the way.

This itinerary is based on what we actually did, plus the places and experiences I think are most worth your time. I’ve included practical details like how to get around and how to fit everything together without making the trip feel rushed.

If you’re looking for wildlife, great food, and fun beach adventures, here’s how to spend a perfect three days in Siesta Key. Let’s go!

Don’t miss out!

Itinerary Overview

Beach life is best life!

Overall, this itinerary is designed to be pretty relaxed, and I’ve built in some flexibility too, especially around the evening activities, as sunset times and weather can change depending on when you visit. And don’t worry about packing anything too fancy! The vibe of Siesta Key is very casual, and it’s fine to rock up to a restaurant in the same clothes you wore to the beach.

To make following the itinerary as easy as possible, I highly recommend staying around Siesta Key Village. There’s so much to do here, and it’s easy to get around without a car, although you can rent a golf cart, scooter, or e-bike if you need to.

For traveling beyond the Village, great news! The free Route 77 Siesta Islander trolley connects the Village to most places on this itinerary, and you can use an occasional rideshare if you need to! I don’t recommend driving everywhere, as parking at some popular beaches is notoriously difficult and best avoided.

🏖️ Day 1: Beaches & Sunset E-Biking
Relax on Siesta Beach, explore Crescent Beach and Point of Rocks, then finish the day with a sunset e-bike tour.

🛶 Day 2: Mangroves & Turtle Beach
Kayak through the mangroves around Midnight Pass, spend the afternoon at Turtle Beach, and enjoy dinner and drinks in Siesta Key Village.

🐬 Day 3: Dolphins & One Last Adventure
Revisit your favorite beach, take a dolphin cruise, then choose between the Siesta Key Drum Circle or an LED night kayaking tour before one final dinner in the Village.

Day 1

Breakfast – Fuel up for a beach day

Another Broken Egg Cafe in Siesta Key, Florida

We’re starting bright and early this morning because today is all about the beach!

You can always grab something quick at your hotel, but if you fancy heading out, I recommend Another Broken Egg Cafe. It’s right in Siesta Key Village, so it’s really convenient if you’re staying in the area, as I suggest. It’s popular for its Southern-inspired breakfast favorites, like shrimp ‘n grits and crab cake Benedict, but they’ve also got French toast and cinnamon rolls if you prefer something sweet in the morning.

Another Broken Egg opens at 7 am, and it gets pretty busy first thing, so I recommend either arriving as soon as it opens or joining the online waitlist ahead of time. That’s how we snagged a table!

Of course, you might just want something quick, in which case I recommend stopping by Mojo Risin’ Coffee Co for a coffee and pastry to go. Either way, aim to be done eating by 9 am so you can get a good spot on Siesta Beach before it gets busy.

Morning – Relax at Siesta Beach

Siesta Beach!
Siesta Beach in Siesta Key, Florida
We love it here

There’s no better place to start your Siesta Key trip than Siesta Beach. This is the island’s most famous stretch of sand, and once you get there, it’s pretty easy to see why!

Fun fact for all the crystal fans out there: the sand here is made up of around 99% quartz! That’s what gives it its bright white color and super-soft feel. Best of all, it doesn’t hold onto heat in quite the same way as regular sand, so it’s comfortable to walk on barefoot, even for my kids! We also loved the calm, shallow water, which was perfect for cooling off with a swim.

Give yourself a good few hours here and just enjoy it! There are plenty of handy facilities around the main pavilion, including restrooms, outdoor showers, shaded areas, a snack and drink bar, picnic tables, volleyball courts, and a playground, which came in handy for us.

We stayed here until about midday, swimming and enjoying ourselves. Then, when you’re ready, we’ve got oysters for lunch!

Lunch – Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar

Lunchtime!
Drink in Captain Curts Village - Siesta Key, Florida
Might as well get a drink too!

After a few hours at Siesta Beach, head south for lunch at Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar. It’s one of Siesta Key’s longtime favorites and a great place to try some classic Florida seafood!

Captain Curt’s is especially famous for its clam chowder, so that’s definitely worth trying, but there’s plenty of seafood on the menu, as well as chicken, ribs, and tacos. Grab a drink here and take some time to enjoy the atmosphere rather than rushing your meal. After all, the beach this morning was hard work!

We left Siesta Beach around midday and got here by about 12:30 pm. The easiest way to get here without a car is to hop on the free Route 77 Siesta Islander trolley south toward Turtle Beach, then get off near South Village/Stickney Point Road. Captain Curt’s is just a short walk from the stop. Then from here, you can walk to the rest of our afternoon stops – easy peasy.

Not ready to head straight back to the beach? You can also spend a little time wandering around South Village after lunch. There are a few shops and casual spots around here, so grab another drink or have a browse before making your way down to Crescent Beach.

Afternoon – Crescent Beach & Point of Rocks

A parrotfish seen while snorkeling in Siesta Key, Florida
A parrotfish we saw while snorkeling at Point of Rocks

After lunch, it’s only a 5-minute walk down to the sand on Crescent Beach. Our second beach of the day is quieter than Siesta Beach but has the same soft white sand and clear water, so it’s an ideal spot for some more beach time. It’s a tough life, but someone’s gotta live it!

While you’re here, make your way south toward Point of Rocks, one of the more unusual natural spots on Siesta Key. It’s a rocky limestone formation at the end of Crescent Beach and a popular place to snorkel when the water is calm, with plenty of fish and marine life to look out for.

Even if you don’t feel like snorkeling, I still think it’s worth coming down here because it feels really different from the rest of the island’s long sandy beaches. We spent between 2.5 and 3 hours enjoying Crescent Beach and Point of Rocks, but you definitely don’t have to stay that long. If you’ve had enough beach time for one day, head back toward South Village a little earlier and grab a drink or simply relax before dinner.

Dinner – SPEARFISH GRILLE

Dinner time!

After your afternoon at Crescent Beach and Point of Rocks, walk back toward the beach access near Captain Curt’s and head to SPEARFISH GRILLE for an early dinner. It’s only around a 10-15 minute walk to get here, so you don’t need to worry about squeezing in another trolley ride before this evening’s tour.

This is a laid-back waterfront spot with a marina setting and plenty of fresh seafood on the menu. We sat outside and enjoyed our grouper and lobster rolls, but there were also burgers and sandwiches on the menu, so don’t worry- it doesn’t have to be seafood!

I also love that it’s super casual here, so you can come straight from the beach without heading back to change first. Since we have an evening tour coming up, it’s best to eat fairly early tonight. We sat down at around 5 pm to ensure we were wrapped up in time for our tour, although if you can count on yourself to be speedy, 5:30 pm would be fine. Just be ready to leave the restaurant by 6:30 pm so that you can walk over to the meeting point for your sunset e-bike tour.

Evening – Cruise Siesta Key at sunset

An ebike on the beach at Siesta Key, Florida

Sunset on Siesta Key Beach, Florida (5)
The sunset was amazing

After dinner, it’s only a few minutes on foot to the meeting point for this sunset e-bike tour. It starts at 7 pm and lasts around two hours, so it’s a really fun way to make the most of your first evening on the island!

You’ll start with a quick tutorial before setting off along Siesta Beach, and the coolest part is that you get to ride the e-bikes right on the sand. The bikes have pedal assistance and a throttle, so you can put in as much or as little effort as you like, which makes this a great option even if you’re not usually much of a cyclist.

The tour is timed to ensure you catch that famous Gulf Coast sunset, with plenty of opportunities to stop for photos along the way. You’ll also visit Patriot’s Point for the evening flag-lowering ceremony, which is a very memorable end to the evening! I also like the fact that groups are capped at just seven people, so it feels much more personal than a huge group ride.

You should finish at around 9 pm, then you can head straight back and get some rest after a very full first day! If you’re staying around Siesta Key Village, the free trolley runs until 10 pm, so you can use that to get back after the tour. If you’ve still got some energy, there are plenty of spots in the Village to grab a drink, or you can call it a night and get some well-earned rest after a very full first day!

Day 2

Breakfast – Village Cafe

Breakfast-sandwich-eaten-in-Siesta Key, Florida
Time ot fuel up for your kayaking tour!

Today starts with a kayaking adventure, so I recommend fueling up beforehand with breakfast at Village Cafe. It’s a popular breakfast spot that serves up all of the classics, from French toast to breakfast sandwiches. We got here at 7:30 am, which is when the cafe opens, to ensure that we had plenty of time to eat without having to rush.

For the 10 am kayak tour, try to leave Siesta Key Village by about 9 am. The free Route 77 Siesta Islander trolley takes around 30 minutes to reach Turtle Beach, but I recommend allowing some extra time for waiting and traffic, just to be on the safe side.

Morning – Kayak through the mangroves and Midnight Pass

Kayaking through mangroves!

Such a great experience

This morning, we’re heading out on this guided kayak tour through the mangroves around Midnight Pass. Book the 10 am departure, which will get you back around midday, just in time for lunch!

The tour starts at Turtle Beach Public Boat Launch, only about a five-minute walk from the Turtle Beach trolley stop. Once you arrive, you can choose between a kayak or stand-up paddleboard before following your guide into the Jim Neville Marine Preserve.

We loved how peaceful it felt out here, and we had such a great time paddling through mangrove islands and tidal creeks while our guide pointed out local wildlife. I wasn’t quite quick enough to capture it with my camera, but we even spotted a manatee!

One of the highlights is stopping at Midnight Pass Beach, a wild stretch of white sand that feels much more secluded than Siesta Key’s busier beaches. It’s only really accessible from the water, so it feels really remote and hidden. This was such a fun adventure for us, and it’s not surprising that it has over a hundred positive reviews!

Why We Book Tours with Viator

Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:

  • Free cancellation on most tours – Most of the tours on Viator allow you to cancel and get a full refund up to 24 hours in advance. This is handy in case plans change, or if booking an outdoor activity, the weather forecast is looking grim.
  • Reserve now and pay later – You can secure your spot on some of the most popular tours well in advance and not pay until closer to the day of the tour.
  • Lowest price guarantee – If you happen to find the same tour at a lower price elsewhere, Viator will refund you the price difference.
  • Pay in your chosen currency – Avoid costly international transaction fees by choosing to pay in your home currency.
  • Peace of mind – When booking with tour operators you find in person on the street or in small booking offices, you are often promised one thing and given another. This online platform holds tour operators accountable with a written description of inclusions as well as the opportunity for customers to leave reviews.

Lunch – Turtles Restaurants

The kayak tour finishes around midday, so once you’re back on dry land, head to Turtles Restaurant for lunch. It’s right by the water, and it’s very casual, so you don’t need to worry about changing out of your kayaking clothes.

The menu has tons of options, so even picky eaters should be satisfied here! After a big breakfast, I wasn’t really feeling a huge meal, so I went for the fish tacos, but I thought the stuffed flounder looked really good.

We’re heading to the beach after this, so there’s no need to rush. After a pretty active morning, I think you’ve earned a rest!

Afternoon – Relax at Turtle Beach

Turtle Beach in Siesta Key, Florida
Turtle Beach

After lunch, make your way over to Turtle Beach, which is just a 5-minute walk from our lunch spot – perfect!

Now, Turtle Beach feels quite different from Siesta Beach. The sand here isn’t as soft and pale, – although it’s still very pretty – and the whole area feels a lot less built up. There’s not loads you need to “do” here, which is why we loved it!

We spent some time looking for shells, and then we just put our towels down and relaxed. But if you fancy something a bit more active, you can rent a paddleboard from SURFit USA back at the boat launch and head out on the water again.

You might be wondering about the name “Turtle Beach”, and yes, it’s very fitting! Sea turtles nest along Siesta Key between May and October. You may see marked-off nests while you’re here, so make sure to give them plenty of space and avoid disturbing any nesting turtles or hatchlings.

To make your visit even more memorable, you can actually symbolically adopt one of these Siesta Key nests through Mote Marine Laboratory. Higher adoption tiers will even place a sign with your name directly on the beach nest and send you updates after the baby turtles hatch! How special is that?

Spend a few hours enjoying the beach however you like, and head back to Siesta Key Village whenever you’re ready.

Evening – Explore Siesta Key Village

Fudge Factory on Siesta Key, Florida

There are all sorts of fun little shops here

Once you’re back from Turtle Beach, spend some time exploring Siesta Key Village before dinner. This is essentially the heart of the island, and Ocean Boulevard is lined with little boutiques, souvenir shops, restaurants, and casual bars.

You don’t need a set plan here—just enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. Have a wander through the shops, stop by Alvin’s Island if you want to pick up some Siesta Key souvenirs or beachwear, then pop into The Fudge Factory for something sweet. They make fresh fudge in-house, but you’ll also find chocolates, candy, caramel apples, and ice cream if fudge isn’t your thing!

I especially like the Village around this time of day because it starts to get a little livelier as everyone heads out for the evening. Take your time exploring, then when you start getting hungry, make your way over to Siesta Key Oyster Bar for dinner!

Dinner – Siesta Key Oyster Bar

You can’t beat fresh oysters!

For dinner tonight, head to Siesta Key Oyster Bar, or SKOB as pretty much everyone calls it! I love this place because it sums up everything that’s great about Siesta Key Village. It’s busy and social, with live music and lots of great seafood. Now, this isn’t the spot for a quiet, romantic dinner, but I loved the lively beach-town feel and the fact that we could turn up in our casual clothes and fit right in!

Come here for dinner whenever you get hungry, and if you’re enjoying the vibe, why not stay for a drink or two? This place has a fantastic atmosphere, and it’s one of the most beloved spots in Siesta Key, so take your time and enjoy it. We don’t have an early morning tomorrow, so it’s no biggie if you end up staying late.

Day 3

Breakfast – Sun Garden Cafe

Such good breakfast bagels!

For our final morning, we headed to Sun Garden Cafe in Siesta Key Village, and it was a lovely spot for breakfast. It’s a sunny yellow cafe with a big garden and an even bigger menu! I had a huge breakfast bagel, and my kids loved the waffles and pancakes.

We got here at around 8 am, but it doesn’t matter if you pitch up later! We’re heading to the beach after this, so there’s no need to rush.

Morning – Revisit your favorite beach or explore the Village

Back at Siesta Beach!

You’ve seen quite a few of Siesta Key’s beautiful beaches by now, so this morning, head back to whichever one you liked best! I actually love leaving a bit of flexibility in an itinerary like this because you never really know which place you’re going to like most until you get there.

We chose to head back to Siesta Beach for another few hours of swimming and relaxing on that ridiculously soft sand. But if you’re feeling a little beached out by this point, spend the morning exploring Siesta Key Village instead! This is a good chance to browse any shops or galleries you may have missed, pick up a few souvenirs, or grab anything you wanted to come back for.

You can also grab a coffee, stop for an ice cream, or simply wander around and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. There’s no need to rush this morning, so just choose whichever option sounds best and enjoy a slower start to your final day!

Lunch – The Cottage

After the beach, we headed back to Siesta Key Village for lunch at The Cottage. It’s a colorful little spot with a lovely patio, and the menu has a bit of everything, from fresh seafood and tacos to salads, sandwiches, and other lighter lunch options. It was perfect for a chilled-out lunch before our afternoon adventure, especially if you fancy sitting outside with a cold drink!

We wanted to take the trolley to High Tide Tiki Tours, so we left by 2 pm to make sure we had plenty of time to get there and check in.

However, if you went back to Crescent Beach this morning, I wouldn’t bother coming all the way back up to the Village for lunch! Captain Curt’s Sniki Tiki is much closer to Crescent Beach, with a casual tiki-bar atmosphere and a menu full of Florida favorites like fresh seafood, fish tacos, sandwiches, and burgers. Even better, it’s just a 3-minute walk from the meeting point for the dolphin tour, so it’s way more convenient!

Afternoon – Cruise the coast & spot dolphins

You get some great views! Photo credit: High Tide Tiki Tours

This afternoon, head out with High Tide Tiki Tours for a 2-hour dolphin cruise around Siesta Key. We went for the 3:30 pm tour to allow plenty of time for lunch without eating into the evening.

If you’re coming from Siesta Key Village, take the free Route 77 Siesta Islander trolley toward South Village/Stickney Point, then walk the rest of the way to the meeting point. High Tide Tiki Tours is just across the street from Captain Curt’s Village, so it’s easy to find. If you had lunch at Sniki Tiki instead, you can just walk straight over.

The tour checks in at 3 pm and heads out at 3:30 pm. Cruising through the waterways around Siesta Key is a lot of fun, and make sure to keep your eyes peeled for dolphins along the way! Spotting a fin breaking the surface is so exciting, especially for the little ones. We loved watching them swim and play in the waves, and one even surfaced almost within touching distance of our boat.

Of course, dolphins are wild animals, so sightings can never be guaranteed, but they are very common around Siesta Key, so I like your odds. And even without dolphins, the cruise is a lovely way to see more of Siesta Key from the water and take in the coastline from a completely different angle.

Tickets cost around $50 USD for adults, and there are private options too if you’re traveling as a group. You should finish at around 5:30 pm, then you can head back toward Siesta Beach and the Village for the evening.

Alternative – Private dolphin & sandbar tour

Dolphins-swimming-and jumping in Siesta Key, Florida
So neat!
A person snorkels in Siesta Key, Florida
You also go to some great snorkeling spots

If you’re traveling with a group of up to six people, it’s worth considering this private Siesta Funship dolphin and sandbar tour instead of a shared group tour. Yes, it’s more expensive than the regular dolphin cruise, but you get three hours out on the water with the boat all to yourselves, which is so much more special!

The trip starts by heading out around Sarasota Bay in search of dolphins and manatees, then you’ll stop at a sandbar or beach where you can swim, paddleboard, or make use of the boat slide – how fun does that sound? I think this would be a perfect activity to do as a family or with friends. There’s even the option to stop at a tiki bar for a frozen drink along the way, and the boat is BYOB with coolers and ice provided.

For this itinerary, the 2 pm departure works really well. You’d need to leave lunch in Siesta Key Village at around 1:30 pm and then hop in a rideshare to the meeting point by North Siesta Key Bridge, which is 10-15 minutes away, depending on traffic.

You’ll finish at around 5 pm, which still gives you loads of time to head back toward Siesta Beach and the Village for the evening. If I were traveling with a small group and wanted to splash out on one really memorable experience, this would be a very strong contender.

Evening – Choose your adventure

Option 1 – Siesta Key Drum Circle

Drum Circle - Siesta Key Beach, Siesta Key, Florida
The drum circle!

If you’re in Siesta Key on a Sunday, I would definitely try to make time for the Siesta Key Drum Circle. This is one of those experiences that feels truly special to the area, bringing locals and visitors together on Siesta Beach for an evening of music, dancing, and community as the sun sets over the Gulf. It’s a fun way to experience a completely different side of Siesta Key!

The Drum Circle has been a Siesta Beach tradition since 1996, with local drummers, dancers, and spectators gathering on the sand each Sunday evening. The atmosphere is incredibly laid-back, and everyone gets into it in their own way. Some people simply sit back and watch, while others bring their own drums, dance in the sand, dress up, or join the circle as the music picks up. There’s no right or wrong way to experience it, which is part of the fun!

The drumming and dancing usually begin about an hour before sunset, and you can stay for as little or as long as you like. We loved how informal it felt—you can simply show up, enjoy the music and people-watching, and soak up the atmosphere. Best of all, it’s completely free!

If your third day in Siesta Key falls on a Sunday, great! If it doesn’t, but you’ll be here on a Sunday evening, I would recommend rearranging your itinerary a little to make it work. It’s the kind of local tradition that’s worth planning around. Then, once you’re done, head back to Siesta Key Village for dinner at Daiquiri Deck.

Option 2 – Paddle Siesta Key after dark

Fun Florida Tours in Siesta Key, Florida (2)

So much fun. Photo credit: Fun Florida Tours

If you’re not in Siesta Key on a Sunday, not to worry, because this nighttime kayak tour is an excellent alternative! The kayaks have clear bottoms and LED lights underneath, so you get to see what’s going on beneath you as you paddle! It’s such a fun way to experience Siesta Key after dark, and you never know what you might spot in the water – perhaps even a conch or a manatee!

The tour starts just across the North Siesta Key Bridge and takes you out onto the surrounding waters for around 1 hour and 15 minutes. If you choose an earlier departure, you may get to watch the sunset from the water before everything starts to light up around you. Once it gets properly dark, you’ll have views of the illuminated bridge and city lights as you paddle, which sounds pretty magical to me!

There are several evening departure times, including 6:30 pm, 8 pm, 8:30 pm, and 9:30 pm, so you can pick whichever works best around dinner. Just make sure you arrive 15 minutes early for the safety briefing, because late arrivals aren’t able to join. And if the weather is too windy around the usual launch point, the operator may move the tour to a nearby mangrove area instead.

Dinner – Daiquiri Deck Siesta Key Village

For dinner tonight, head to the original Daiquiri Deck, which is right in the heart of the Village. This place has been around for years and offers a quintessentially Siesta Key mix of frozen drinks and live music in an open-air setting. Perfect!

The food is exactly what you’d expect from a fun beach bar, with things like coconut shrimp and even gator bites on the menu. And if you’re feeling ridiculously hungry, there’s also the Big Deck Energy burger challenge. If you finish the whole thing, you’ll earn yourself a spot on the Wall of Fame!

If you’re doing the night kayak tour, you can either eat here beforehand or come back afterward, depending on which departure time you picked. I would just play this one by ear and go whenever you get hungry.

And however you spend the evening, make time for one last walk along Siesta Beach before you call it a night. It’s the perfect way to wrap up the trip!

Where To Stay on Siesta Key

The Inn on Siesta Key in Siesta Key Florida 1

For this itinerary, I recommend staying around Siesta Key Village for easy access to restaurants, shops, the beach, and the free trolley. However, South Village also has its perks, especially if you want to be closer to Crescent Beach and enjoy a slightly quieter stay. Here are my top picks for every budget and travel style!

The Inn on Siesta Key – $$$

If you’re looking for somewhere a little more special, The Inn on Siesta Key is one of my favorite upscale options in this area. It’s a tiny boutique property with just six accommodations, so it feels much more like a beach house than a big hotel, and you’re still within easy reach of Siesta Beach and the Village.

The suites range from one to three bedrooms, making this an especially good choice for families or groups who want more space. There’s also a heated outdoor pool, plus bikes, beach gear, BBQs, and even free laundry facilities, which is always handy on a beach vacation!

Rates often start from around $300 USD per night, although they vary a lot by season and suite size. Check availability and book The Inn on Siesta Key here!

Siesta Key Beach Resort & Suites – $$

If you want to stay right in the heart of Siesta Key Village without paying luxury prices, Siesta Key Beach Resort & Suites is ideal. The location is SO convenient, with restaurants and bars right outside, plus Beach Access 5 just across the street. You definitely won’t need a car if you stay here!

There’s a heated zero-entry pool and hot tub, plus the Big Tiki Lounge for drinks, and guests get beach chairs, coolers, and bikes included with their stay. I think it’s a great option if you want somewhere fun and central rather than a quiet resort tucked away from everything.

Rooms typically start from around $250 USD per night, although prices vary depending on the season and room type. Check availability and book Siesta Key Beach Resort & Suites here!

Tropical Beach Resorts – Sarasota – $

If you want to stay close to Crescent Beach without paying luxury prices, Tropical Beach Resorts – Sarasota is an excellent pick. It’s actually a collection of small boutique properties with lots of Old Florida charm, all just a short walk from the sand.

There’s a heated pool, shaded garden areas, BBQ grills, and plenty of places to sit outside, plus you can rent bikes, paddleboards, and kayaks right from the property. The rooms range from cozy studios with kitchenettes to larger one-bedroom suites with full kitchens, so it works really well for couples and families alike.

Rates vary quite a bit depending on the room and time of year, but with prices ranging from $180–$300 USD, this is generally one of the better-value stays near Crescent Beach. Check prices and book Tropical Beach Resorts here! Check prices and book Tropical Beach Resorts here!

Renting a Car in the USA

Car rental photo for the United States

The United States is a vast country with diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to scenic national parks. While public transportation exists in major cities, renting a car is often the best way to explore the country’s wide-open spaces and hidden gems.

We always book with Discover Cars and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find the right vehicle for your needs, and add affordable full coverage insurance. If you want a full breakdown, check out our Discover Cars review here.

Tips for Renting a Car in the USA

  • Drive on the right: In the U.S., vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road, and the driver’s seat is on the left. If this is different than your home country, take some time to adjust before hitting busy streets!
  • Know the local rules: Speed limits, road signs, and driving laws can differ between states. For example, turning right on red is generally allowed after a complete stop, unless a sign indicates otherwise. Always check the specific rules for the states you’ll be driving in.
  • Add full insurance: We always recommend full coverage rental insurance, especially in the U.S., where long distances, varying road conditions, and unpredictable weather can lead to unexpected situations. Discover Cars makes it easy (and affordable!) to add this peace of mind when you book.
  • Choose the right car: Consider the nature of your trip. For city driving, a compact car is convenient, while for road trips or national park visits, an SUV might be more comfortable. With Discover Cars, it’s easy to filter by vehicle type, transmission, fuel efficiency, and more to find the perfect fit.

What You Need to Rent a Car in the USA

  • A valid driver’s license from your home country.
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended if your license is not in English or uses a non-Roman alphabet. Some rental companies may require it, so it’s best to check in advance.
  • A credit card in the driver’s name is typically required for the security deposit.
  • Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old, with a young driver surcharge applicable for those under 25. Some companies may have higher age requirements, so make sure you double-check.

An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.

In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.

We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.

Theresa and family at Siesta Key, Florida
Thanks for reading!

I had such a fun time exploring Siesta Key with my family, and three days felt like the perfect amount of time to enjoy the island without having to rush around! This itinerary packs in some of my favorite experiences, from kayaking through the mangroves and spotting dolphins to cruising along Siesta Beach on an e-bike at sunset, while still leaving plenty of time for those gorgeous beaches, great food, and wandering around the Village.
