STEUBENVILLE — The hot shooting continues for Big Red.
Steubenville came out shooting lights out once again on Friday night, hitting 10 3-pointers, scoring at least 21 points in all four quarters and shooting better than 57 percent overall in topping the 90-point mark for the fifth time season, rolling to a 9-2-68 victory over Carrollton.
“We started fast and got a nice lead and were able to keep the pressure up,” Big Red head coach Mike Haney said. “When the shots are falling, our defense seems to get faster. We’re happy with the way we played.”
Big Red, which improved to 20-1 with one game to go in the regular season, had four players reach double figures and were very close to that being six.
Senior Tre Wiggins and sophomore Landon Bowers each netted 21 points to tie for the game-high, both connecting for three triples. Junior standout Santino Haney and senior Jermaine Moore each netted 14 points, Moore hitting two treys. Senior Cole Bowers just missed double figures in points (nine) and rebounds (eight) while senior JoJo Rea tallied eight points, a dunk attempt that did not go through away from double digits.
“That’s what we try to do, get at least three in double digits. When we get four, it’s a nice thing to see,” coach Haney said. “We shared the ball, it seemed like we had a lot of assists and guys were seeing the open man.”
Big Red came out blazing, opening a 13-3 lead. The Warriors (15-7) closed within five, but Steubenville pulled back ahead, 26-17, after one quarter.
Landon Bowers and Moore hit 3s on back-to-back possessions to spark a 10-0 Big Red run early in the second.
Carrollton made another push, rattling off an 8-0 run to trim the margin, Big Red holding a 49-36 lead at the break.
In the second half, though, Big Red raced out to a 13-2 run to start the third quarter and the route was on as Steubenville led by as many as 33 before subbing in the fourth.
The Warriors were led by 15 points from Tayvian Johnson, who hit two of their seven 3s.
Big Red finished 43 percent from beyond the arc and went 10 of 11 from the line.
“They’re a real good team,” coach Haney said of the Warriors. “We were worried about their size, we were hoping our speed would create the faster tempo and that worked to our advantage.”
