Gators fall one spot in KenPom ratings over Christmas break

Date:

Coming out of the Christmas break, the Florida Gators have moved up a spot to No. 12 in the KenPom College Basketball Ratings.

The Orange and Blue’s adjusted efficiency margin improved by 0.6 points to a +26.87 net rating, accounting for the small bump. Florida started the season ranked No. 2 by KenPom, but the non-conference schedule has proven difficult with losses to No. 2 Arizona, No. 6 Duke and No. 7 UConn.

Florida is playing with an adjusted tempo of 71.3 possessions per 40 minutes, the same as in the last update. However, the Gators are now ranked No. 64 in the category, down from No. 51. The Gators continue to move further from the top 50 in tempo, a similar problem that last year’s club faced.

The Orange and Blue are among the unluckiest Power Four teams in the country, with a -.118 luck rating. Only Boston College (-.134), Northwestern (-.127), South Carolina (-.123) and West Virginia (-.127) have worse luck this season. KenPom’s luck rating is the deviation in winning percentage between a team’s actual record and its expected record using the correlated Gaussian method.

If the math stuff is confusing, ignore it. The gist is that a positive number is worse than a negative number. High luck can result in a lower rating than a record suggests, and negative luck often means underperformance.

Strength of Schedule according to KenPom

Florida’s strength of schedule remains inside the top 25, dropping from +13.36 (4th) to +8.33 (25th) because of a weak stretch of opponents. Further broken down, Florida’s opponents are scoring 113.1 points per 100 possessions, the 25th most in the country, and allowing 104.7 points, good for 24th overall.

Florida’s non-conference SOS rating is the same (+8.33); however, that figure ranks 27th overall since other leagues have started conference play.
