U.S. Hikes Travel Fees and Entry Requirements. Where Will Travelers Draw the Line?

Travel is getting more expensive. Travelers in Japan are facing higher fees on hotels and trails. Cities in the U.K. are preparing to launch taxes on overnight stays. 

But few other destinations have leaned harder into higher fees and entry restrictions than the U.S. Within the last year, the country has introduced a number of travel fees and entry requirements for international travelers, with plans to launch more in the coming months. 

Among the most eye-popping of the bunch: a visa “integrity fee” that would charge international travelers an extra $250 or more to enter the country.  

It’s enough to make some tourists reconsider travel plans. International travelers who said they were less likely to visit the U.S. cited tariffs and trade policies impacting affordability (32%), travel expenses (30%), and visa or entry restrictions (27%), according to an April report from Skift Research.
