Demonstrators from various advocacy groups gathered outside a political meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025, to protest the actions of federal lawmakers, including Congressman Doug LaMalfa. The protest, featuring participants with lighted signs and outfits, took place outside the Chico Evening Republican Women’s monthly meeting at Beatnik’s Catering, where LaMalfa was scheduled to speak.

Gina Bax, president of the Chico Evening Republican Club, expressed her pride in being part of the organization, saying, “We’re just women who love this country. I love this country, I’m an immigrant, I’m Hispanic. I came to the United States 30 years ago and I love this country and, and I love being involved with this organization. And I am proud to be an American and I think that’s the wonderful thing about being in this country and be part of this organization.”

Bax noted the irony of women protesting a women’s event and emphasized the need for women to empower and support each other. The protest was organized by Chico-based advocacy groups, including the Re-Sisters and the Chico Peace Alliance, to voice disapproval of LaMalfa’s actions, particularly military strikes on suspected drug boats near Latin America.

Laurel Yorks, a volunteer with the Chico Peace Alliance, explained,

We chose tonight because Doug LaMalfa is here and he needs to listen to us. That’s what we want. We want him to listen to us. We have not been able to talk to him since the last town hall and we can’t get appointments with him. So we’re here, so he’ll listen.

A member of LaMalfa’s communications team acknowledged the demonstrators’ First Amendment rights, noting that they regularly protest outside the congressman’s office.
