Joe Brolly: The game we played was about entertainment, but Mayo snoozefest might just be the final straw

John Maughan was co-commentator on Mayo GAA TV for last Sunday’s senior football final between Ballina Stephenites and Breaffy. After 29 minutes he said: “All I can do is apologise to the viewers for this really terrible spectacle. I’m not sure it’s going to get any better.”

Sure enough, hundreds of people upped and left at half-time, leaving empty rows of seats in the middle of the main stand at MacHale Park.
