A Dunkirk man was killed when his sport utility vehicle struck a fuel tanker truck Monday morning in the town of Pomfret. The crash resulted in Route 60 being closed for several hours.

Firefighters from Fredonia and Cassadaga, along with troopers with the New York State Police, were alerted at about 10:15 a.m. of the crash, which occurred near the intersection of Webster Road in Pomfret.

According to the New York State Police, a southbound 2017 GMC being operated by Samuel D. Lobley, 41, of Dunkirk, crossed into the path of a northbound tanker truck.

The GMC sustained significant damage in the collision and came to rest on its driver side. The north-facing Melzers Fuel Service tanker truck also had significant front-end damage.

Lobley was pronounced dead at the scene. He was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, the New York State Police said.

Due to a diesel fuel leak, the state Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the scene.

Route 60, between Webster and Straight roads, was closed for several hours; the county’s Fire Police Team was called for traffic control.

The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, Commercial Enforcement Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Fredonia Fire Company assisted in this investigation.

Route 60 reopened around 4 p.m.
