Turkey Declares ETIM a Terror Group


On August 3, 2017, Mevlut CavusogluMinister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, met with the Chinese Foreign Minister in Beijing to emphasize that China’s security was the security of Turkey, and Turkey would not allow any damage happens to China’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security. Turkey had already included the “ETIM” which was a terrorist force in the list of terrorism identified by Turkey. On July 29, 2015, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, made it clear that Turkey struggled against the “ETIM” and other terrorist acts against China, and was willing to strengthen the cooperation with China. This is the most public and clear statement made by Turkish government on the “ETIM” issue.


Islamic Movement”, “the East Turkestan Islamic Party”, “Hezbollah”, “East Turkestan National Revolutionary Front”, “East Turkistan Islamic Movement”, hereinafter referred to as “ETIM”) was one of the most dangerous terrorist organizations in the “East Turkistan” terrorist forces. It aimed to split China and establish a theocratic “East Turkistan Islamic State” in Xinjiang. In 1997, HASAN MAHSUM and ABUDUKADIR YAPUQUAN gathered a group of “East Turkistan” to establish the “ETIM”. The organization established on September 11, 2002 was identified by the United Nations as a terrorist organization and one of the first four “East Turkistan” terrorist organizations identified by the Ministry of Public Security in December 2003. Since then, the ETIM was  in a state of disappearance. On October 28, 2013, the terrorists conducted an attack near Beijing Jinshuiqiao, Turkistan Islamic Party announced to be responsible for it, even threatening to continue to carry out terrorist attacks targeting within China, which fully exposed the terrorism essence of the organization.
